Mercedes Food Truck
Premium European Quality
Mercedes very simply put makes some of the best commercial vehicles there are – and you have good reason to want that quality for your food truck build. Mercedes Sprinter vans come as a cab chassis for the ideal super durable high end food truck base. And if your needs are even larger a Mercedes Benz Vario as pictured on the header can accomodate most any food truck floor plan.
More of a vintage look? Popularly in use by German police and fire departments during every decade of the last century, Mercedes has great classic van options too.
Karpatia Trucks offers you the following options for a Mercedes Food Truck:
- New Mercedes Sprinter Cab chassis food truck builds
- Premium pre-owned conversions of Mercedes-Benz Sprinters and Vario
- Vintage Mercedes conversions
New - Sprinter Cab Chassis
With a starting retail price in the US of $40,595 for a 100% new 2020 model and our more modest cab superstructures clocking in at just under $25k with all the basics installed, you can drive a brand new food truck out the door for less than some of our competitors convert used units.
Superstructures for the Sprinter can be custom made and fitted to any size and requirement. As a base truck this Mercedes is extremely versatile – whether you need the modest inventory of a taco truck or a full on professional combination oven and 12 burner gas range.
With its loadweight going up to 5 tonnes – that’s over 11000 lbs – you can outfit a restaurant kitchen with very few limits and restraints.
Add to that the excellent resale value of a Mercedes and you have yourself a steal of deal.
Recently owned Mercedes conversions
Properly serviced the engine of a Mercedes will run over 200k miles without issue – and in use for all types of commercial jobs they regularly do. Are Mercedes not expensive to maintain, with costly and complex parts and repairs?
There is no statistical evidence of this whatsoever and it is likely “fake news” circulated by Japanese or American manufacturers or even “other Germans” and people who do not really know trucks regurgitating talking points.
As a percentage our margins are roughly equal on a Mercedes, Fiat Ducato or American Step van – there is no bias here on our part and we understand the concerns, we simply think they are not grounded in reality.
For a Mercedes Benz Sprinter in good condition, fewer than 10 years old including food truck superstructure, prices start at a super low $45k.
80's Vintage Mercedes Food Truck
Most vintage vans are, even though they are lookers, a pain to drive – like our Citroen H van conversions. We recommend buyers to transport most vintage food trucks on a trailer for longer distances and 90% of the time end up installing electric power steering as an upsell as requested by the customer.
This is fundamentally how Mercedes vintage trucks are different. 150k miles on a machine from the ’80’s? No need to replace the engine at all – simply revise a little and service regularly and you can keep on food truckin’ for 150k miles more.
Most of these units were maintained by the German government as fire- or police trucks and you can expect the most correct and complete service record for a vintage vehicle there is.
Most vintage Mercedes Food Truck are a Vario, T1 or T2.
Pricing on request and subject to availability, but in general decent used ones pre-conversion are available from $7000 exw. We will then price the conversion as we go along and work with you in installments.

Step Van vs. Box Truck
Most US food trucks are a converted step van because of the widespread used availability of step vans, with hundreds for sale on Craiglist and other listing sites. Every garage down your street worth even the slightest bit of their salt will know how to work them. Other reasons to pick a step van are their tall ceiling, ample floor space, ease of getting in and out and their overall reliability.
Now we have the benefits covered we can say hands down the Mercedes Benz Sprinter has step vans beat on almost all these fronts. The exceptions are their used availability in the US and the accompanying familiarity of unspecialized garages with the vans.
Is deciding then a matter of new vs. used? Not entirely. A converted older step van can be done from $40k and up but we can provide a converted Sprinter in that price range if you allow for shipping time. Karpatia is the first to offer this quality of recent used vehicles for US export and they can compete with step van conversions very well dollar for dollar and pound for pound.
On dealers, Mercedes-Benz stands out by having a very tight control on their dealerships. Every shop will have service professionals that are factory certified, highly skilled and knowledgeable. From parts and service to leasing, the star is a brand for a reason. You might pay a little more per service but in total the operating expenses of a Mercedes Food Truck are lower than other models with similar age and usage.
